Nearly 50% of Police Stations in NE Lacks Landline Facility

NEW DELHI: Consider a situation in which you urgently need to contact the closest police station. That might not be doable if you live in one of the northeastern states.

Here is the startling statistic: 48.07 percent of police stations in Northeast India lack a landline phone. On March 15, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) made this information public in the Lok Sabha.

According to the data, there are 312 police stations without a landline out of the 649 police stations in the area. 126 of Assam's 312 police stations lack landlines, followed by Manipur (64), Meghalaya (60), Mizoram (26), and Nagaland (36), according to Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai. Assam has the highest 329 police stations, followed by Manipur (84), Meghalaya (76), Mizoram (44), Nagaland (86), and Sikkim (30).

For Arunachal Pradesh, there was no information on the availability of landlines, wireless or mobile devices, or automobiles. According to the data, Sikkim is the only state where all 30 police stations have telephones.

In addition, the data showed that seven of Manipur's 84 police stations lack a vehicle. Five of the 76 police stations in Meghalaya are without cars. All police stations in Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim have vehicles available.

Regarding CCTVs, Assam leads the list of northeastern states because it has put cameras in every police station; in Manipur, there are no CCTVs in any police stations. 25 of the 76 police stations in Meghalaya have CCTV cameras installed.

According to Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass on March 14, the Assam government has spent more than Rs 3.68 crore holding Cabinet sessions across nine districts since September 2021.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass stated that the largest expense, Rs 1,13,92,399, was incurred for a cabinet meeting conducted at Haflong in the Dima Hasao district.

The General Administration Department minister responded to a query from Congress lawmaker Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha in the Assembly by providing details on the cost incurred for hosting the Cabinet meetings in these nine districts.
