NAGAON: In a shocking incident, a group of five individuals attacked a police officer during an investigation into a drug racket. The victim, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Chinmoy Baruah Konwar of the Rupahihat Police Station, was reportedly on duty when the attack occurred.
According to sources, ASI Kowar was conducting an inquiry related to illegal drug activities when the group assaulted him, attempting to hinder the investigation.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, an Assam Police officer sustained serious injuries after he was attacked by suspected Naga miscreants while carrying out a vehicle theft operation on January 7 at Yachang C Village in Nagaland. At about 8 p.m., a police team led by Officer-in-Charge Gangaram Phukan of Teok and Selenghat police outposts, in the company of Jatin Bora, conducted a raid in the border village.
The situation took a worse turn when the police team was surrounded by local residents, which led to an assault involving sharp weapons. Officer Gangaram Phukan received severe injuries and was taken directly to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where he remained in critical condition.
This caused serious concern over the safety of police personnel during inter-state operations, especially in the border areas close to Assam and Nagaland. Such incidents highlighted the need for improved coordination between the authorities of Assam and Nagaland to ensure the safety of law enforcement officers while operating in volatile areas.
