Assam: Newborn Kidnapping Bid Foiled at Silchar Medical College & Hospital

SILCHAR: Mystery and tension gripped Silchar Medical College & Hospital on Thursday night as three individuals were apprehended while attempting to abduct an infant from the maternity ward. The group, comprising two women and one man, was caught red-handed as they sought to abscond with a newborn from the hospital premises.

According to reports, the two women entered the maternity ward around midnight, where they started scanning the area for newborns. During this time, one of the mothers in the ward was awake, attending to her crying newborn.

As per local news reports, the two women persuaded the mother to allow them to soothe the baby, assuring her they could calm the child. However, as soon as they held the infant in their arms, they made a hasty exit from the ward in an attempt to flee.

The mother's outcry drew the attention of hospital staff, and the hospital security swiftly intervened, apprehending the two women just outside the hospital and rescuing the baby from the clutches of the abductors.

Local police promptly arrived at the scene, and based on statements provided by the two women, a man was also detained in connection with the case.

All three individuals involved in the attempted kidnapping have been taken into custody.

This alarming incident has raised concerns within the Silchar Medical College & Hospital community regarding the adequacy of its security arrangements. The hospital's administration is expected to conduct a thorough review of its security protocols in light of this incident.

Earlier in a separate incident, the medical college hit the headline for all wrong reasons as an Inspector of Drugs was brutally assaulted by a group of junior doctors. Bonrai Rogmai, the Inspector of Drugs was later admitted to the surgery department for treatment. SMCH had suspended Anurag Dey, a junior doctor for assaulting a government official inside the medical campus. However a source in the SMCH, however, claimed that Rongnai first slapped a junior doctor after a heated altercation over a medical report. Dr Bhaskar Gupta, the in-charge Principal of the SMCH said, Rongmai visited the hospital on Monday to meet a close relative who was admitted for dialysis. What led to the unpleasant incident was being probed into, Dr Gupta said.
