Bongaigaon: The 12-hour Assam bandh called by Koch Rajbanshi Jatiya Sanmilani to demand ST categorization of the six communities and also the 12-hour Assam bandh called by the Tribal Union to oppose ST categorization of the six communities, disrupted normal life in Bongaigaon and Chirang on Wednesday.

Though the common people were confused about which group they were supporting by observing the bandh, nevertheless, the bandh was successful. All educational institutions and markets remained closed during the bandh hours. Vehicles remained off the road. No unwanted incident occurred during the bandh hours.

Nandan Debnath, a resident of the area, said that the bandh was like a joke. “Two organizations have called for bandh on the same day and for the same duration but for fulfilment of opposite demands. One organization is demanding ST status for the six communities while the other organization is opposing it. Bandh supporters of the two organizations have compelled us, the common people, to observe the bandh also. We are confused as we don’t know who we are supporting by observing the bandh.”
