DOOMDOOMA: Basanta Utsab (Spring Festival), one of the major programmes observed by Doomdooma Sakha Lekhika Samaroh Samiti every year, was celebrated this year also on Sunday at its venue at Bir Raghav Moran path, Rupaisiding with a daylong programme. The programme got underway with lighting of lamps by President Dibyalata Deka, senior member and poet Manjul Sarmah, and senior member Anju Hatibaruah in memory of its departed members involved since its establishment. Then, senior members Manjul Sarmah, Dr Aruna Gogoi Baruah, Pranita Handique, Beena Devi Bordoloi, Dibyalata Deka, Kironmoyee Hazarika, Gita Goswami, Anju Hati Baruah, Chitra Hazarika Junu Bora, Purnima Konwar, Lakhimi Neog, Miranda Saikia, Anju Konwar, Archana Bora, Smriti Rekha Bora, Chitralekha Bora, Banti Sonowal, and Nalini Bora were felicitated in the meeting with phulam gamochas. After this, three competitions were held on Pitha (Assamese Cake), Bihunam, and extempore speech. Rashmi Gogoi, Sangita Chaudhury, and Rumi Kalita Gogoi were adjudged first, second, and third respectively in the Pitha competition while Sangita Baruah Deka, Manisha Phukan, and Rashmi Gogoi bagged first, second, and third prizes respectively in the Bihunam competition. In the extempore speech competition, Sangita Baruah Deka won the first prize while the second and third prizes were won by Manisha Phukan and Sangita Chaudhury respectively. The judges for Pitha competition were Pranita Handique, Purnima Konwar, and Mira Saikia. The Bihunam competition was judged by Bina Devi Bordoloi and Kakoli Devi Baruah. The extempore speech competition was conducted by Junu Bora and Mala Baruah Kakoti as judges. In between the competitions, Poet Manjul Sarmah recited a poem ‘Modern Bihu’ that portrayed the changes that Bihu had undergone over the years. Before the prize distribution ceremony, Bina Devi Bordoloi advised how one should prepare for the various competitions in future. The programme concluded with a collective Bihu dance and Assam Sangeet ‘O mor aponar desh’ performed by the members. A wall magazine edited by Rashmi Gogoi was inaugurated by immediate past president and prominent poet Indu Dutta Uzir in conjunction with the Basanta Utsav. In the end, the members were served tea along with pitha, coconut laddu, nimki, and chira mixed with buffalo curd.
