GUWAHATI: In a strong move against corruption in the transport division, Basistha Police detained Naba Deka, an Enforcement Officer at the Transport Department office in Betkuchi, on April 18. Deka has been accused of demanding money from trucks carrying construction material upon receiving lots of complaints from the public.

The arrest took place after reports emerged of illegal monetary demands in areas such as Jorabat, 14th Mile, and Khanapara. Deka is said to have targeted dumpers and stone, sand, and soil-laden trucks without permits and exploited the situation to extort unauthorized payments from drivers.

Police sources confirmed that two First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed at the Basistha Police Station, which led to the prompt action resulting in the arrest of Deka. Five others were also arrested in relation to the case. The other suspects are Saurav Rongpi, Kulen Rongpi, Naziruddin Ahmed, Bipul Ingti, and Nongkur.

This action follows increasing public outcry and long-standing accusations against Deka, leading the authorities to take suo motu action. The incident has rekindled debate on the necessity of increased oversight and accountability within enforcement agencies, especially those dealing with regulating high-value logistics, including the movement of construction materials.
