Assam: Biswanath locals rescue injured deer, give it a new lease of life

Biswanath: The local residents of Natun Gaon area of Biswanath district in Assam on Tuesday rescued an injured deer while it was running for its life. The animal had strayed out to the area from the nearby forest in search of food.

The seriously injured deer had entered the area from the Northern Range of KazirangaNational Park (KNP) in search of food. It was attacked by an unidentified animal, as per locals. The deer sustained injuries on its back leg.

Later, it was taken to the range office of Biswanath where the forest department provided first aid to the injured deer.

A local eyewitness said, "We were on our way to see the boat at the 'ghat' of Notun Gaon in Biswanath when we suddenly noticed that an injured deer was running for cover. We caught it and saw that it sustained injuries on its back leg. We immediately handed over to the forest department."

Earlier on Monday, a herd of three to four elephants had strayed out of KNP in the Bihali area of Biswanath in search of food and destroyed two houses, crops and caused a lot of damage to the area. The wild elephants ate 10 sacks of rice and two sacks of lentils from a ration shop, said locals.

In the recent past, man-animal conflicts have been on the rise; animals are coming out of forest areas in Biswanath frequently in search of food.
