Majuli: The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate, Bhuban Gam on Thursday retained the Majuli seat for his party as he emerged victorious from the said assembly constituency.

He defeated Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Chittaranjan Basumatary by record margin votes and marched towards the victory.

Gam won with a margin of 41,530 votes after securing 66, 094 votes.

The counting of the votes began at 8AM and at around 10 AM, Gam had secured 27,006 votes while Basumtari got 10,173 votes. SUCI-C's Bhaity Richong was third with 698 votes while NOTA (none of the above) had 666 votes.

A total of 71.76 per cent of the 1.33 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise in the by-elections held in Assam on March 7.

After the resignation of Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the need to hold a by-election to this seat was necessitated as Sonowal was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on September 27 last year.

The Saffron party too had secured overwhelming victory in the Assam civil polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) too entered the northeast as its made debut with two seats after Delhi, Punjab and Gujarat.

The AAP candidate Dhiraj Kumar Singh won from ward no 11 in Tinsukia while Udita Das won from Ward no 14 in Lakhimpur.

The voters also didn't let BJP down as the saffron party swept majority of the Municipal boards across the state.

The BJP had fielded 825 candidates, while the Congress fielded 706 candidates and the AJP nominated 243 candidates.

As many as 70 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the Assam Municipal Election 2022 on Sunday, which ended peacefully. Fortunately, no untoward incident was reported, and no request for re-poll from any part of the state has been received.
