KOKRAJHAR: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of BKWAC Mihiniswar Basumatary on Wednesday hailed the 1st phase notification of villages within the council issued by the Governor of Assam and hoped that the 2nd phase of the notification including delimitation of constituencies for holding elections will follow as early as possible.

The Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in exercise of power conferred upon him under section 3(1) of the Boro Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council Act, 2020, notified the villages in the 1st phase consisting of 957 villages spread over 19 districts minus Soniptpur, Biswanath, and Goalpara and Karbi Anglong districts where the Bodos have sizeable population.

Talking to The Sentinel, the CEM of BKWAC Mihiniswar Basumatary said that the notification of villages of BKWAC was long awaited by the people of the council. He thanked the Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and Minister of Education and Tribal Affairs Dr Ranoj Pegu for taking initiative to notify the villages within the council. He hoped that the Government of Assam will take necessary measures for 2nd phase notification of villages and to start delimitation of constituencies in BKWAC to ensure early holding of council elections. He also appealed to the Government of Assam to decide the villages of Sonitpur, Biswanath (which are not included to BTR), Goalpara, and Karbi Anglong without much delay.

BKWAC was created with the signing of the BTR Accord in 2020 as UBPO was one of the stakeholders. The formation of BKWAC is nearly completing five years. It is expected that the council is to have over 1200 villages spread over 22 districts outside BTR districts.
