HAFLONG: The 50th anniversary of the declaration of Emergency in India was solemnly observed as ‘Black Day’ at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Haflong on Thursday. The observance served as a poignant reminder of what many recall as one of the darkest chapters in the country’s democratic history.

The event began with the inauguration of an exhibition by Dr Vijay Kumar Gupta, Chairman of DNPL, Government of Assam, and former vice-president, general secretary, and treasurer of BJP Assam Pradesh. The exhibition featured portraits and written accounts that captured the heartbreaking memories of the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, by the then Congress government under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Following the exhibition, a solemn organizational meeting took place in the presence of BJP leaders and dedicated party workers. The gathering reflected on the lasting impact of the 21-month Emergency period, during which constitutional values were suspended and democratic voices stifled.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Dr Gupta spoke at length about the implications of the Emergency and its enduring legacy. He emphasized how the suspension of civil liberties during that time served as a stark lesson on the importance of preserving democratic institutions. He also cautioned the public not to allow reoccurrence of such a situation in the country in future.

Also in attendance were Nandita Gorlosa, Minister, Government of Assam, Mrinal Hatkhowa, State Convenor of the BJP’s Foreign Affairs Department, as well as all Executive Members (EMs), Members of Autonomous Councils (MACs), district office bearers, Mandal presidents, Morcha leaders, and party workers.
