NEW DELHI: Dr. Ritrik Raj Bhuyan, Director of the Heart and Robotic Surgery department at Fortis Escorts Hospital, New Delhi, has achieved a significant milestone in cardiac surgery. On Sunday, he successfully led a heart transplant procedure, with the donor heart being transported from Nagpur to Delhi through a specially arranged "green corridor" for a smooth and rapid transfer.
The donor, a brain-dead patient from Nagpur, had his heart airlifted to Fortis Escorts Hospital to help save the recipient's life.
Dr. Bhuyan, hailing from Dhekiajuli in Assam's Sonitpur district, is one of India's leading cardiac surgeons. His medical career includes advanced training and extensive experience at prestigious institutions such as Gauhati Medical College, Assam Medical College, as well as renowned centers in Australia and New Zealand.
In addition to his achievements in heart surgery, Dr. Bhuyan played a key role in establishing North India's first Robotic Surgery Centre, earning him recognition as a pioneer in robotic surgical techniques. His expertise continues to position him at the forefront of groundbreaking medical advancements in India.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Apeksha Hospital made history by successfully completing the city’s first-ever kidney transplant, marking a significant leap forward for healthcare in the region. The young patient received a kidney donated by their mother, with the entire procedure completed at only 25% of the usual cost compared to larger hospitals outside Assam.
This marks a milestone not only in terms of the medical achievement but also in making advanced healthcare affordable for residents of smaller cities.
