GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the ruling BJP will mark a clean sweep in the three assembly constituencies out of the five that are going to the polls.

According to him, the ruling party would win easily in the Thowra, Mariani and Tamulpur constituencies.

"In my assessment will easily come victorious in the Thowra, Mariani and Tamulpur. Gossaigaon and Bhawanipur will see a contest," he added.

Sarma also claimed that former Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain joined the BJP from the Congress as he wants to do development works for the people of his constituency.

"When I quit the Congress, some called me a betrayer. But today I become the Chief Minister," he said.

Bypolls to these five constituencies will be held on October 30 this year.

Meanwhile, in a press release issued by the All India Congress Committee, the Congress party announced the names of the candidates who will be contesting in the Assam Assembly by-polls in three assembly constituencies. The candidature of the three candidates was approved by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The press release read, "The Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposals for the candidature of the following persons to contest the ensuing Assam Assembly bye-elections as Congress candidates from the states mentioned below."

The candidates who have been given tickets by the Congress party are Jowel Tudu, Bhaskar Dahal and Manoranjan Konwar. Jowel Tudu will be contesting from the 28 Gossaingaon Assembly Constituency while Bhaskar Dahal will fight for the MLA seat in 58 Tamulpur Constituency.

The Congress candidate who is given the ticket from 107 Thowra Assembly Constituency is Manoranjan Konwar.

In Assam, the assembly by-polls will be held in the constituencies of Gossaingaon, Tamulpur, Thowra, Mariani and Bhabanipur on October 30.
