Assam: Cachar Youth Arrested For Facebook Post Expressing Desire To Join ULFA

GUWAHATI: The Assam police on Monday arrested a youth from the Cachar district for posting a Facebook feed where he expressed his wish to join the banned separatist military group ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom) Independent.

The accused youth has been identified as Bappa Kumar who is a class higher secondary pass-out student. He shared a news report which stated many youths from different parts of Assam were joining the militant outfit.

Kumar hailing from Silchar city said that he was also ready to join and work with the outlawed military organization.

However, Kumar has been arrested as informed by the Cachar SP (Superintendent of Police) Ramandeep Kaur on Monday 28 March.

The SP further informed that the Facebook post by the accused was traced by the Cyber Crime portal through which officials were able to generate a report.

The police then file a case against the accused and nabbed him from his residence.

He was then interrogated by the police in connection with the social media post that he posted saying that he want to join ULFA(I).

At the time of interrogation, Kumar confessed in front of the police about his interest to join the military group.

Silchar SP Kaur stated that this case comes under the Unlawful Prevention Activities Act which provides for the more effective prevention of certain unlawful activities of individuals and associations.

Meanwhile, the accused youth has been sent to judicial custody as informed by the senior officer. Police will make effort to extend the remand period of the boy added Kaur.

Earlier, a few days ago Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi had expressed his concern over youths from Asam joining ULFA (I) military outfit. He also asked the central agencies to visit Assam and investigate the matter.

It may be mentioned that around 216 individuals including males and females have joined ULFA (I) in the last 6 months and were recruited.
