Assam: Carcasses Of 23 Endangered Vultures Found In Rani Forest Area

GUWAHATI: 23 vultures and a dog were found dead in the Rani Forest area of Assam with many other vultures in critical condition.

At least 36 vultures were reportedly poisoned in the Nalapara area which falls in the Barihat section of the Rani forest.

On Friday 15 April, the cremation of the 21 dead vultures was done by the forest department officials at the Nalapara Forest Block Office along with the general public.

Among the 23 carcasses of vultures, two are kept at the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre in Rani Forest for forensic testing to know the exact cause of death.

Meanwhile, 12 vultures are undergoing medical treatment. Notably, this was the 2nd time that the vultures of the same location are poisoned.

It may be mentioned that the team of VCBC (Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre) in Rani Forest has lost 23 vultures and rescued many others critically injured.

The VCBC has successfully recovered about 12 vultures by taking aid from the local public and in association with the forest department.

Notably, in recent days, there have been several such cases reported from different areas of the state where vultures are either found injured or dead.

Earlier a few days ago on 9 April, a total of 7 injured vultures were rescued in severe condition from the Rani Forest area of Assam while 3 were confirmed the death.

The incident was due to vulture poisoning in the area as informed by the concerned authority.

On 17 March 2022, 100 vultures and one steppy eagle were found lying dead in the Milanpur area of Chaygaon in Assam's Kamrup district.

According to reports, police investigated the cause of the bird's death and it was found the vultures died due to toxic carbohydrates that were found to be involved in the incident.
