
Guwahati: In a shocking incident, criminals broke into a car in broad daylight on Saturday in Assam's South Kamrup's Uparhali and stole Rs 10,000 in cash.
The criminals targeted the vehicle and smashed the glass of Utpalananda Acharya's XUV500 SUV, bearing registration number AS 01 BE 0202, according to reports.
Acharya hailing from Xoru Tezpur was attacked as he and his spouse were heading to the weekly market after dropping their child off at school. According to reports, cash and 20 grams of gold jewellery that were bought for a wedding were taken by the criminals.
The incident took place inside the jurisdiction of the Bijoynagar Police Outpost, directly in front of the Uparhali market.
Over the previous few days, similar incidents of car window breaking and valuables theft have been reported in the Bijoynagar area. According to sources, Bijoynagar police have not yet successfully stopped these recurrent incidents or captured any of the offenders.
Last month, after questioning seven apprehended members, a Latasil PS squad from the Central Guwahati Police District (CGPD) busted a gang during a robbery attempt in the Zoo Road area. The districts of Dhubri, Barpeta, and Darrang were identified as the gang's base.
Sadek Ali (21), Akbar Ali (22), Lokman Ali (32), Abu Bakkar Siddiqui (36), and Saidul Rahman (27), all of whom are from Dalgaon, have been detained. The squad also uprooted the entire gang by arresting Dilwar Khan (28), the receiver, and Joynal Abdin (27), who works as an Uber driver during the day. In the city, they have been implicated in numerous burglaries and break-ins.
