GUWAHATI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a major development in its investigation into the Assam investment scam, filing a chargesheet against four people—Bishal Phukan, Abhijit Chanda, Sumi Bora, and Tapon @ Tarkik Bora—who have been accused of involvement in the Dibrugarh Investment Scam.

This case was presented before the Special CBI Court in Guwahati within ninety days from the dates of their arrest.

This is one of the 41 investment fraud cases referred to the CBI by the Government of Assam. The present case is based on allegations lodged initially at Dibrugarh Police Station on September 2, 2024, under FIR No. 352/2024.

The central figure, Phukan, is accused of inducing people to invest by promising them guaranteed high returns and depositing their money into his personal Demat account. He is also accused of violating SEBI guidelines. He did not fulfill his promises but misappropriated the funds to lead a lavish lifestyle.

The CBI investigation proved that it was a well-thought scheme, including manipulated reports, notarized agreements, and fake documents, all to fool the investors. Despite the up to 30% in returns guarantee, several people complained about discrepancies and never received a penny back.

Electronic gadgets and other damning evidence were found during searches conducted at 93 places across five states by the agency. The CBI today added to its strength further in a case against the Assam investment fraud by arresting a fugitive- Gopal Paul of AJRS Marketing Pvt. Ltd.-at Siliguri.

Earlier, another accused, Monalisa Das, had been chargesheeted on November 18. In the meantime, the court has rejected bail for accused Sumi Bora, who continues to be in judicial custody. The CBI is not leaving any stone unturned to unearth the entire extent of these fraudulent operations and bring the perpetrators to book.
