Assam celebrates 77th birth anniversary of Jayanta Hazarika

Guwahati: Assam fondly remembers eminent music composer and singer Jayanta Hazarika on his 77th birth anniversary today.

The man behind the 'sur bahini' was the younger brother of music maestro late Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

His integration of western notes into lucid Assamese tunes placed him as the archetype of progressive Assamese music.

His first venture with Nirmal Prabha Bordoloi's lyrics 'Mor Minati Tora' was one of the masterpieces.

His songs 'Tumar morome mur', 'Agali Botahe kopale', 'Surat Mogon bhayal rati', 'Mayamoi Rupali Jonak' , 'Luitor Xutot Likha Robo Mur' and 'Ghoorni Botahe Bisari Napale' sound rather simple to the ear but celebrates an act of defiance and romance.

Popularly known as 'Rana da', the tender and wistful lyrics and tunes flowing from a passionate and mellifluous voice gave a unique grandeur and sublimity to his songs.

Ahead of his times, he was among the few musicians who could play more than two octaves in the Harmonium.
