
SILCHAR: A stakeholders meeting was held in the New Conference Hall of the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar, Silchar which was chaired by the respected Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam regarding the plans for closure of the Gammon Bridge over Barak River at Badarpurghat with effect from 21st May, 2025 for repair work by the NHIDCL for a period of two months.
The Chief Secretary requested all concerned stakeholders to share their valuable inputs and also took update from the different authorities regarding the issues and challenges. The District Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of all the three districts of the Barak Valley participated in the meeting and shared their valuable inputs.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Silchar to inspect alternate routes for diverted heavy traffic from NH6, due to the precarious condition of the Gammon Bridge at Badarpur Ghat- the lifeline for Barak Valley, Mizoram, and Tripura.
With the closure of NH6, necessary for urgent bridge repairs, CM Sarma inspected the Kalain-Silchar State Highway and the sinking zone under PWD improvement, accompanied by the Member (Technical) NHAI, Director (Projects) NHIDCL, Commissioner & Secretary PWD, DC Cachar, and others. The feasibility of using NH27 via Haflong was also reviewed to ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential goods.
