GUWAHATI: In a significant move, the chief secretary of Assam had a productive meeting on August 11 with Mara Kocho, IES, Managing Director, North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. (NEHHDC), and his team.
The discussions focused on strategies for enhancing the packaging and promotion of tourist-specific local products in NEHHDC outlets, as well as identifying and collaborating with popular entities frequently visited by tourists in Assam. Kocho also provided updates on the Ashtalakshmi Hut, which is being developed along the lines of Dilli Haat.
The facility will comprise 24 stalls, three from each of the eight Northeastern states, to showcase the region’s diverse crafts and products. Additionally, it was encouraging to note that the Eri Spinning Mill in Baksa is performing well, generating significant employment opportunities for local weavers.
The Eri stole, embedded with a QR code linking to its details, was gifted to Kocho as an honour. Further, it was suggested that Kocho explore engagement with various organisations to create stronger market linkages for local artisans, encompassing both weaving and handicrafts.
Meanwhile, under the "One Station One Product" initiative launched by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the programme has gained phenomenal growth, as outlets are now operational at 142 stations across the region. The outlets are vibrant spaces that have been promoted for local artisans and vendors selling indigenous crafts. This has also generated significant economic opportunities.
