SIVASAGAR: A citizens' meeting was held at Yuva Dol in Sivasagar on Friday, in response to growing concerns over recent communal tensions in the district. The gathering saw active participation from local residents, youth organisations, and representatives of various ethnic and community-based groups.

Speakers at the meeting strongly condemned any attempt to disturb Sivasagar’s long-standing tradition of peace and unity. As a key outcome, the citizens adopted a five-point resolution aimed at promoting harmony and preventing divisive activities in the region.

The resolution includes steps to counter hate speech, strengthen peace committees, encourage youth engagement, and establish a community watch system. The meeting concluded with a call for collective responsibility in preserving the social fabric of Sivasagar.

In another significant development, 20 national and ethnic organisations convened a Chinton meet in Sivasagar and adopted an 11-point resolution aimed at making Assam "foreigner-free". The organisations issued a stern ultimatum to all suspected ‘illegal settlers’ to vacate Upper Assam by August 15.

The resolutions include demands for the identification and deportation of individuals who allegedly entered Assam after March 24, 1971, in line with the Assam Accord. The meeting also stressed the removal of names of suspected foreigners from the state’s voter list and endorsed ongoing government eviction drives targeting encroached government, forest, and tribal lands.

A call was made to indigenous landowners to refrain from selling land to suspected foreigners. The organisations also appealed to indigenous Muslim communities to support the movement.
