GUWAHATI: The Assam government is mulling to reopen colleges for Higher Secondary (HS) to Post Graduation (PG).

Further, hostels will also be opened for double-dose vaccinated students. Meanwhile, a concerned SOP is to be out before Aug 31.

The state education minister Ranoj Pegu informed that classes for HS Final Year, Degree Final Year, University final year will start from the 1st week of September.

"For students the first vaccine is compulsory to attend the classes. They will have to take their second vaccine within a stipulated time frame and will be responsible for it. Teachers and other employees will also have to be vaccinated," said Pegu.

The Assam Cabinet has okayed the opening of hostels but completing both doses of vaccine is compulsory. A different SOP will be released by the education department for this by 31st August, said Pegu.

Earlier on August 25, the Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta has said that there would be no complete 'Unlock' from September 01 and few relaxations will be imposed in the state.

Mahanta on Wednesday said that the new SOP for the Covid-19 restrictions will be issued on September 01. "There will be no complete 'Unlock' in Assam from September 1 but there will be few relaxations. We are going to issue the new SOP on September 1. The health department is ready to tackle the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic," the health minister said.

The minister has also informed that the government has prepared the Kalapahar COVID-19 hospital for the post-COVID treatment in which 106 beds have been set up.

Nearly after five months, the inter-district public transport is likely to resume from September 01. Schools and colleges from Classes 9 onwards are likely to reopen from September 1, the guidelines of which might come in the new SOP.

Earlier on August 07, the health minister has hinted that at a time when the basic necessities of life have become a challenge due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a major respite has reached the people of Assam as the state government is likely to announce more relaxations concerning the COVID-19 restrictions following August 15.

The state Health Minister further said that the state government is closely monitoring the pandemic situation which is now reflecting considerable improvements.
