GUWAHATI: In a landmark initiative to improve the welfare of public transport workers, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a Rs 25 crore allocation for a pension fund during his address at the Secretariat Administration.

The announcement includes a promise to increase the fund by an additional Rs 50 crore in the next financial year, demonstrating the government’s commitment to the sector.

This allocation will be incorporated into the state’s budget for the current year and aims to address the long-standing financial challenges faced by public transport workers, many of whom were previously excluded from pension benefits. The move is expected to provide much-needed financial security and relief to workers in this essential sector.

In addition to the pension scheme, the Chief Minister unveiled plans for a Mini Integrated Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Khanapara. This project is part of a broader effort to enhance Assam’s transport infrastructure and improve service efficiency for passengers and workers alike.

Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and Industries and Commerce Minister Jogen Mohan have been entrusted with overseeing the implementation of the pension scheme. Their leadership will ensure effective management and equitable distribution of the funds, benefiting public transport workers across the state.

This dual initiative underscores the state government’s dedication to improving the lives of its workforce, particularly those in essential sectors like public transportation. By addressing their financial and infrastructural needs, the government is fostering economic stability and promoting the well-being of these vital contributors to Assam’s economy.
