
LAKHIMPUR: In a big push to help flood-affected people, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a Rs 350 crore financial package for 684,487 families affected by recent floods.
The aid forms part of the state's "12 Days of Development" initiative, launched to deliver rapid relief within 12 days. CM Sarma, making an announcement at a public function in Lakhimpur, said the money will be paid to families whose houses are damaged and whose livelihood has been affected and whose crops were damaged.
He also spoke about the other initiatives that included cancellation of microfinance loans of 16 lakh women of the state so that their burden would be lessened. In addition, over 5 lakh ration cards were distributed in 37 districts of the state with the beneficiaries getting 5 kg rice for December.
Referring to development initiatives in Lakhimpur, CM Sarma mentioned that key infrastructure projects in the district would include a Rs 26-crore bridge for improved connectivity in the area. The government also committed to the establishment of a law college and a B. Sc nursing college for girls, aiming to improve educational opportunities for local communities.
The ration cardholders shall also be entitled to free treatment up to Rs. 5 lakh and coverage under Orunodoy against the fraudulent claims. It has been a significant step by the state towards making a better life for the residents, who were affected by flood in Assam.
