Assam: CM Announces Rs 50 Lakh Reward For Lovlina Borgohain

GUWAHATI: The Assam government offered a reward of Rs. 50 lakhs for champion boxer Lovlina Borgohain on Wednesday. At the Assam Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made this declaration.

The announcement comes after Lovlina Borgohain, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, added another achievement to her résumé by winning her first gold medal at the World Championships on March 26.

Taking to Twitter, CM Sarma wrote, “Lovlina makes Assam proud again by striking Gold medal in #WorldBoxingChampionships Many Congratulations @LovlinaBorgohain We’re all so thrilled. My best wishes and blessings for your future endeavours.”

The Australian boxer Caitlin Parker, a two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, was defeated by the Assamese boxer in the 75 kg final of the IBA Women's World Boxing Championship in New Delhi with a split 5-2 decision.

With this victory, Lovlina Borgohain has given India a total of four gold medals at the current World Boxing Championship.  At the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships earlier that day, Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen won the title of World Champion for the second time in a row by defeating Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Tam, a two-time Asian champion.

With a score of 5-0, Nikhat won the 50 kg flyweight match. After illustrious fighter Mary Kom, Nikhat is now the second Indian female boxer to win several gold medals at the World Championships.

Nitu Ghanghas, a master boxer, won the gold medal and cemented her place in history on March 25 in the Women's World Boxing Championships final.  In the 48 kg weight class, Nitu Ghanghas dominated Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg of Mongolia, winning 5-0. Nitu is now the sixth Indian woman to win a world championship.
