GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised serious concerns regarding the increasing number of Bangladeshi nationals attempting to illegally enter India, which he linked to the current economic crisis in Bangladesh.

He revealed that infiltration attempts have increased on a daily basis and that 10 to 20 people are attempting to cross into India as Bangladesh is facing severe financial challenges.

Apparently, the currency crisis and high inflation have pushed the citizens of Bangladesh to seek better opportunities and stability across the border. The situation has further enhanced migration pressures in the region, causing a threat to border security.

On a recent occasion, Assam Police detained a Bangladeshi national, Asma Akther, for illegal entry near the India-Bangladesh border. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed the arrest, saying that the police were vigilant along the border and that they successfully pushed the infiltrator back into Bangladesh.

Earlier this month, six other Bangladeshi infiltrators, two of whom were women, were apprehended and returned to Bangladesh.167 people have been apprehended for illegal infiltration into India and deported.

With this increase in the infiltrating attempts, BSF has stepped up patrolling along the 1,885 km long Indo-Bangladesh border, and the Assam Police is not letting its guard down in thwarting such attempts of illegal crossing.

The Assam Government has reassured its firm resolve to strengthen the Border Control measures to thwart unauthorized crossing. The government is working on vigilance and strategic intercessions to protect state sovereignty and national security.
