GUWAHATI: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, stated on Wednesday that over 1,000 people who were detained on suspicion of child marriage had still not been released on bail.
As he spoke in front of the state assembly, the CM said, "Child marriage would be outlawed by the state administration. Due to the court's strict stance on the issue, there are currently about 1,000 people in jail on child marriage-related charges who have not yet been granted bail.”
More than 3,000 people in Assam have been jailed thus far as a result of the widespread campaign against child marriage that began on February 3.
A proposal to punish men who have married girls younger than 14 under the 2012 Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act was recently accepted by the state cabinet (POCSO).
Mr. Sarma further informed the state assembly that the state is keeping the debt-to-gdp ratio at 23% and that the GDP of Punjab will be surpassed by the BJP-led administration in Assam within the next three years.
"Punjab GDP is at around ₹ 6,80,000 crore. Assam's GDP is to touch ₹ 4,93,000 crore,” he declared.
According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the number of unemployed people in the state has decreased from 22 lakhs to 12 lakhs. Assam currently has a climate where jobs are awarded exclusively on the basis of merit and there is total openness.
"I occasionally have to take criticism from some party members for not letting them recommend even one applicant for a job," CM went on to say.
Despite the fact that child marriage is "more prevalent in Muslim-majority areas," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that his administration had made sure that nearly equal numbers of Muslims and Hindus were detained in child marriage cases.
