GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has outrightly condemned the brutal attack on journalists at Jadavpur University as an "atrocity" perpetrated by left-ideological groups. His remarks come in the wake of an attack on three journalists—Hridita, Pinki, and Bhaskar—who were covering an event at the campus on March 13.
The Chief Minister alleged that the incident reflects a troubling pattern of politically motivated violence, accusing leftist groups of employing aggression to assert dominance.
Reports indicate that the journalists were attacked by individuals purportedly linked to leftist organizations, disguised as students and university staff. The attack has also sparked major concerns over press freedom and journalist safety in academic environments.
Interestingly, journalist Pinki was physically attacked and allegedly held in detention in the registrar's office, where she was forced to erase critical video footage. Hridita was subjected to verbal harassment and physical threats while on a live broadcast but returned to confront her assailants. Bhaskar was also targeted, locked in the registrar’s office, and subjected to harassment by a mob.
The incident has evoked widespread outrage in media circles with a call for immediate action against the perpetrators. The assault has once again sparked debate over escalating violence on university campus and silencing journalists in politically sensitive issues. The comment of the Assam CM has sparked debate about ideological confrontations among academic circles with the need to take immediate action for accountability and provide greater protection for journalists.
