Guwahati: Taking another step towards building an Atma Nirbhar (self-reliant) Assam in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, the state's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday (September 23) ceremonially handed over vehicles to beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantrir Grammya Paribahan Achoni in Guwahati.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Sonowal said, "I hope that with the vehicle that you get under this scheme, you will weave a tale of success in your respective villages. The success which, in turn, will inspire thousands."

Stating that people from all across the world have adapted to the challenges of a post-COVID world, Sonowal urged the people to trudge ahead resolutely and confidently to make wonders happen. Stating that catastrophes such as the COVID-19 have been witnessed several times throughout human history, Sonowal encouraged the attendees of the programme to have an inherent belief in their ability to overcome challenges that might lie ahead.

The Chief Minister also thanked Assam Transport Minister Chandramohan Patowary -- who happened to be in attendance -- for his role in the implementation of this ambitious scheme.

Sonowal, while lauding the Centre for its initiative to make each Indian 'self-reliant' in these trying times, said, "If the people of a nation can be self-reliant, that nation will be the most powerful nation in the world. To that end, PM Narendra Modi has given us an opportunity, which we will have to make use of."

Sonowal also lauded the PM for his efforts towards empowering the women and developing the youths. "Because of these efforts, the womenfolk are shining everywhere. Wherever they have gotten the chance, they have proven that they are the best," he added.

What is the 'Mukhyamantrir Grammya Paribahan Achoni'?

The 'Mukhyamantrir Grammya Paribahan Achoni' seeks to improve rural connectivity in the villages of Assam. Under the scheme, the Assam Government shall provide assistance to entrepreneurs/self-help groups desirous of starting 'light passenger vehicle' transport services to connect the villages with the nearest town.

The stated objective of the scheme is to improve rural connectivity while creating self-employment opportunities to the entrepreneur residing in rural areas.

10,000 villages are to be covered under the scheme. One beneficiary or registered Self Help Group per village shall be covered and provided subsidy assistance to the extent of 25% of the cost of the vehicle or Rs. 1 lakh (whichever is less).

Significantly, today was the first phase of the rollout of this ambitious scheme.
