GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered the Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and District Transport Officers to keep strict vigilance over the matter of drink and drive during the time of upcoming New Year.

The Chief Minister directed Superintendents of Excise of all districts of Assam to keep their eye on the drink and drive issue on New Year Eve on 31st December 2021 and 1st January 2022.

The chief minister connected with the Deputy Commissioners and other high-ranking officials through video conferencing and ordered them to put the required restrictions on the roads during the celebration of the upcoming New Year in light of preventing the phenomenon of drinking and driving.

He further ordered the DCs to take responsibility for visiting the Medical College Hospitals in the state and other district Civil Hospitals particularly on the night of 31 December. He asked them to make sure about the availability of doctors in the hospitals along with quick medical intervention to the victims of road accidents.

Meanwhile, the Joint Directors of Health Services are also advised by the government to make the ambulances ready to avoid delays in emergency situations.

The CM urged the people and motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol during the festive season. He said that people must enjoy the celebration of New Year but they shouldn't put their life at risk by crossing the limits of enjoyment as life is precious than anything else. Every human life matters and for the sake of enjoying New Year the life of people should not be lost said the chief minister.

In view of the drowning cases in picnic spots, the chief minister asked the SPs and DCs to deploy police officials and personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in such picnic places near river areas to prevent deaths of people while enjoying picnics in the river sites.

He asked the higher officials to take adequate awareness through publicity to avoid rush driving being intoxicated and under the influence of alcohol.

On the instructions provided by the Chief Minister, a drive has been conducted against drink and drive in Guwahati by the Kamrup District Administration on Friday night on 24 December. The drive was conducted under the supervision of Himanshu Das, DTO at the Ganeshguri area and other places in Guwahati.
