Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday directed the Transport Department to talk with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and find out ways to prevent road accidents.

He directed them during a meeting with District Transport Officers, where, he also reviewed the status of activities targeted toward revenue generation.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, the Assam CM informed the same and said, ''Directed the Transport Dept to ask concerned DCs in the districts, where deaths involving road accidents have exceeded 100 in the past 1 year, to have a meeting with stakeholders & find out ways to prevent accidents.

In the meeting, Sarma also discussed measures to make contactless services readily available to the public.

Meanwhile, while briefing the media on the upcoming initiatives of the Assam Transport Department, State Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya said, ''We will increase the number of interceptors to control the speed of the vehicle and we will also appeal to the public to follow road safety manuals.''

''We have vowed to be strict on those who drive or hold the steering after consuming alcohol. In the coming four to five months we will also provide a mechanism through which the concerned officer can impose a fine on a vehicle who cruises above the set speed limit,'' he added.

In a bid to prevent more road accidents from taking place, Suklabaidya, on Monday directed the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL), and Public Works Department (National Highway) to repair potholes.

The minister also asked the officials about the status of identification and rectification of black spots (accident-prone spots) on national highways.

Besides this, he reviewed the status of setting up trauma centres along the national highways to reduce the number of road accident fatalities.
