GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke to a gathering and came up with several new plans and decisions for the state. First, he spoke about modifications to the “Orunodoi” scheme-a relief program for the needy. It was decided that midday meal cooks in schools would not get financial assistance from the scheme since they are government employees, CM Sarma clarified.
However, he promised that the salary of these cooks along with that of ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers would be hiked in the next budget. The Chief Minister also supported a radical idea called “One Nation, One Election”.
He said that this plan could make the country grow faster. He said that in the past, India followed this system until the disruptions caused by political decisions, like imposing President's Rule, scattered election schedules.
Next was energy savings. CM Sarma revealed a smart way to save electricity in government offices: installing meters that automatically cut power at 6 PM when offices close. "Even ministers and legislators are paying their electricity bills now," he said proudly, adding that this step alone saved the government Rs 33 crore.
Another topic was the scooty distribution scheme of the government for college students. Many students were using scooters to go to college, but some were missing classes and going only to coaching sessions. "Scooties are for attending college, not for roaming around," CM Sarma said sternly. He made it clear that with benefits come responsibilities and appealed to the students to use scooters wisely.
Touching upon the sore issue of religious conversion toward the end of his speech, he said, "Everyone is free to follow their religion", whether it be Hinduism, Christianity, or even Islam. However, with regard to conversions based on false promises, like healing certain diseases, he refused it. "People should choose wisely, and if someone needs assistance later, then perhaps the government will provide that service," he concluded.
With these announcements, the Chief Minister gave a glimpse into his vision of a better, more efficient, responsible, and progressive Assam.
