Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the newly developed Saraighat Lake Park in Amingaon on Monday, marking a significant step towards preserving the scenic wetland and promoting eco-tourism in the region.
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Sarma said, “We thought of preserving the wetland while creating infrastructure that would attract tourists. The development surrounding Saraighat Lake is coming out beautifully. Many tourists have already started visiting the place, and I am confident the beauty of this lake will be further enhanced in the coming days.” The park is expected to become a major recreational attraction and boost local tourism, with support from the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC).
In a parallel green initiative, the Seven Sisters Development Assistance (SESTA), in collaboration with the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district, launched a massive plantation awareness programme in the Mayong area.
As part of efforts to combat climate change and enhance local livelihoods, SESTA and forest officials have identified 53 bighas of common and individual land for the plantation of high-value native and hybrid species. These include Mahogany, Mango, Red Sander, Guava, and sericulture species like Som and Keseru. Over 30 farmers and social activists attended the awareness meeting, where they received demonstrations on scientific tree planting and organic agricultural practices. Beneficiaries will be provided with quality plant seedlings, organic manure, bio-fungicides, tree guards, and technical support.
Pranjal Baruah, Range Officer at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, stated, “The forest department will assist with crop registration and provide ongoing technical guidance to beneficiaries.”
The plantation drive aims not only to curb environmental degradation but also to create sustainable income sources for local communities.
