Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to the first Chief Minister of Assam and Bharat Ratna awardee Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi on his 131st birth anniversary. He tweeted, "My humble tribute to Assam's 1st Chief Minister Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 131st birth anniversary. His contributions towards preserving the culture, identity and spirit of Assam, and ensuring her unity, are legendary, and shall be cherished forever."

Born on June 6, 1890, in Raha village of Nagaon district, Bardoloi joined Congress in 1922 as a volunteer. He went to jail many times in civil disobedience and non-cooperation movement. He became the Chief Minister of Assam in the interim government formed in 1946. After this, the British created a 'Cabinet Commission' for the plan of independence and division.

After independence, Bardoloi faced refugee problem as soon as he became the CM. As soon as East Pakistan was formed, the fundamentalists broke down on the Hindus there. Millions of people came to Bengal and Assam after saving their lives. Bardoloi made a smooth arrangement for the rehabilitation of Hindus by putting the entire administrative system into use.

He started many universities and technical, medical, animal schools etc. He also established the High Court in Guwahati. As the chairman of the constitutional sub-committee, he protected the rights of the tribes. Where they kept Assam in India, they did not allow the interests of the people of their state to be neglected.

Bardoloi was also a good writer. While staying in jail, he wrote books like Anasakti Yoga, Shri Ramchandra, Hazrat Mohammed, Buddhadev etc. He passed away in August 1950 and Government of India posthumously adorned him with Bharat Ratna in 1999.
