Assam CM Reacts To ULFA (I) Death Sentence To Two, Says State Doesn't Need Such Bloodbath

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reacted to the reports of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) executing two youths from the state for allegedly being police 'spies' by saying that the people of the state do not need such a bloodbath.

He added that the future of those who have joined the militant outfit was dark.

The Assam CM went on to say that the state now needs to march on the path of progress, development and peace. He has condemned the incident by saying that it's unfortunate and needless if the reports are true and such execution has indeed happened.

He has urged the ULFA (I) to come forward and join the peace process.

However, the chief minister refrained from commenting on whether such activities carried out by ULFA (I) would have an impact on the ongoing peace process with the outfit and its pro-talk faction.

Meanwhile, the ULFA (I), via a statement made on May 7, said that Dhanjit Das and Sanjib Sarma were sentenced to death after they were found guilty of being 'spies' and working for Assam Police.

Videos of the duo requesting the youths of the state to not follow their path had also been released by the insurgent group.

A video had been released by the banned outfit last month where Sanjib confessed that he was planted as a spy by a top Assam Police official and a senior Indian Army official to extract crucial intelligence.

"Joint Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta and army official Dhunumoni Saikia have trained me and sent me to ULFA. I was asked to gather information on the outfit's camp and also to get information on the route to the camp. The senior police officer and army official said that I will be rewarded with a sum of Rs. 1crore for gathering the information," Sanjib said in the video message.

"I worked in several missions of Army and police before joining ULFA-I for which I was paid 10,000 and 20,000 in two missions respectively," he added.
