BOKAKHAT: The final rites of young Advocate Namrata Bora from Golaghat district were performed on Saturday, as calls for a fair investigation into her death grew louder. Namrata, daughter of Ramen Kumar Bora from Bashapathar, died in a tragic road incident in Shillong on the night of June 4.

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressing serious concern over the matter, tweeted that he has requested Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, which occurred under the Nongpoh Police Station in Ri-Bhoi district. While Namrata died in the crash, four others were reported to have sustained minor injuries. A case has already been registered.

CM Sarma further dispatched Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan to visit Namrata’s family and convey the government’s condolences and assurance of justice. The Chief Minister also initiated a preliminary inquiry in Assam. MLA Phukan expressed concern over certain derogatory social media comments being circulated regarding Namrata.

A citizens’ meeting was held at the Komargaon Regional Press Association office with participation from various local parties, organizations, and concerned residents of Bokakhat subdivision. The meeting welcomed CM Sarma’s intervention and demanded a judicial probe into the death. It also appealed for sensitivity in media and social media coverage, keeping the victim’s grieving family in mind.

Ramen Kumar Bora, Namrata’s father and a practicing advocate in the Gauhati High Court, refuted media claims linking the incident to ‘love jihad.’ He expressed disappointment at how some organizations and media houses attempted to misrepresent the case. “Annayatullah Wadud, one of the names being floated, was not even known to my daughter,” he said. He added that Wadud is married with two children.

He said that Namrata’s friend Pragya had called her out of her apartment on the night of the incident, and Namrata went along. According to Bora, Pragya was in a relationship with Mriganka, one of the other individuals who travelled to Meghalaya that night. He clarified that Namrata only knew Pragya and Mriganka, not the others involved. The night reportedly had begun with some of the group watching the IPL final at a homestay in Kahilipara, Guwahati. Later, Pragya is said to have called Namrata using Mriganka’s phone to invite her along.

Tensions continue to simmer in the greater Komargaon region, with the local public echoing demands for the truth to emerge. Citizens have appealed to all parties to refrain from making inflammatory or speculative remarks until the investigation concludes.
