Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has maintained his tough stance against drinking and driving and issued a stern warning to the violators.

His warning was directed towards the picnic parties and instructed the people to refrain from drinking and driving.

He also added that no road accident occurred on the night of 31st December 2021 in the state, unlike previous years due to his strong stand against drinking and driving.

He also recalled the time when he was the Health Minister of the state and said that a lot of road accidents occurred during the new years eve celebrations mostly due to drinking and driving.

He further went on to say that he was sometimes present in the hospital to have an inside look at the situation and noticed that the people who brought the injured people to the hospital were themselves drunk.

He feared that the drunk people could misbehave with the doctors and other health workers or could even vandalize the hospital.

The authorities have not received a single report of a road accident during New Year's eve. The Assam CM himself made a visit in some areas of Guwahati to monitor the situation and saw that everything was normal.

He warned that the drivers of a particular picnic party would be held by the police if they were found to consume liquor and would also face consequences.

The driver would be prohibited from driving in the return journey and the members of his picnic party will have to return to their homes in cabs, the CM added.

He further said that the police and transport department officials apart from the respective district administrations' officials would make visits to all the picnic spots to ensure that no driver could drink liquor.
