GUWAHATI: Starting his election campaign with an attack on former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally launched his campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party on January 29. Political temperature is rising in the national capital ahead of the elections, more so over allegations about the contamination of Yamuna River.
Aam Aadmi Party Supremo Arvind Kejriwal said the BJP-led Haryana government had deliberately poisoned the Yamuna and that this was an attempt to disrupt the water supply to Delhi. The Chief Minister of Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini, rejected the charges and threatened Kejriwal with legal action. The Election Commission has demanded evidence by 8:00 PM today on this count. The Delhi Jal Board's CEO, however, labeled the allegations as "misleading" and this triggered debate on the quality of water and political posturing in the capital.
CM Sarma said Kejriwal's claims were "bizarre," which raised a question on the logic of poisoning the Yamuna, which is also the source of drinking water for the Prime Minister. He also questioned Kejriwal's intention to clean the Yamuna, saying if he cannot even do that, then he should not contest the election. The Assam CM futher stated, "I think, Kejriwal has lost his mind. After spending much time in the Tihar Jail, his mindset has been criminalised."
The Election Commission has warned Kejriwal that he should not mix the issue of ammonia content in Yamuna with the case of poisoning. The poll body has urged Kejriwal to provide evidence for such claims.
