GUWAHATI: As part of the biggest crackdown yet on corruption in Assam, the Chief Minister's Vigilance Team arrested two brothers—suspended Assam Civil Service (ACS) officials Tanbir Ahmed and Masum Yusuf Ahmed—in connection with a high-level land scam.
The arrests took place after a series of pre-dawn raids on their home in Guwahati, early in the morning at approximately 5:00 AM, as part of an intensified inquiry into illegal land transactions and unjustified wealth accretion.
The operation was led by the Chief Minister's Special Monitoring Cell and is connected with ongoing cases numbered 8/2025 and 9/2025. Both brothers have been charged with gross abuse of official powers and being involved in fraudulent land dealings while they were in government service.
Masum Ahmed, who was earlier the Revenue Circle Officer in Bajali district, had already been suspended from service on February 25, 2025, on the basis of preliminary findings. His brother, Tanbir Ahmed, was also suspended as the probe into the scam gained momentum.
In a similar operation, the CM Vigilance Team also raided the house of Reetimoni Das, a close associate of Tanbir Ahmed, in the Japorigog area of Guwahati. The authorities suspect Das might have helped hide illegal assets or brokered the suspicious land transactions now under investigation.
Those in the raids reported that central documents, electronic files, and other pieces of evidence were taken into custody during the raids and are presently being scrutinized as part of the wider investigation into systematic corruption within the administrative ranks of the state.
The arrests of the Ahmed brothers are an important milestone in the Assam government's constant pursuit of stemming corruption and ensuring integrity in the civil services.
