GUWAHATI: Addressing the recent posts on social media and news reports alleging the transportation of elephants from Assam to the Vantara Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre in Gujarat, the Office of the Chief Minister of Assam has issued a clarification refuting such claims.
The CMO has called such allegations "completely unwarranted and false" and informed that there has been no recent transportation of animals in the recent past.
The claims of the transportation of elephants had raised serious concerns among animal lovers and conservationists. However, the recent clarification by the CMO has put an end to such allegations.
The Assam government has been taking significant measures to safeguard the elephants of the state. To reduce man-animal conflict in Goalpara district, the state government had recently evicted 450 families from the Bandarmatha Reserve Forest.
Additionally, encroachments in forest land is being tackled by the state government in order to provide a safe environment for the elephants.
Earlier this month, a wild elephant caused panic in the greater Charagua area near Demow after it was separated from its herd. The elephant damaged the homes of Ramesh Gowala and Lal Telenga, along with two granaries, and destroyed nearby agricultural fields.
Forest officials promptly arrived at the scene, using firecrackers to drive the elephant away, according to a Forest Department source. The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife in the region, as elephants often stray into human settlements in search of food, leading to such unfortunate encounters. No injuries were reported, but the damage left locals distressed.
