Assam: Concerns Over the Sudden Death of Fishes and Birds at Kedar Temple

GUWAHATI: The sudden death of the fish at the Kedar temple in Hajo of Assam, triggered concern among the local people as well as the authorities.

Many have claimed that the rising water pollution has led to the death of fish and geese. According to reports, a large number of local fauna have perished over the last few days in the Shiva Kund pond in the temple complex. The sudden and unexplained deaths of the fish and birds put the local people in deep concern regarding the development.

Local people also mentioned that the archaeological department did not take ample measures for the protection of the water body and the temple complex as a whole. They also said that even though the problem was reported to the local authorities, proper action was not taken regarding this development.

The local people also mentioned that at least nine geese have died in the past few days alleging that water pollution in the Shiva Kund is the main reason and that leaves only a few of the beautiful birds now living in this temple premises. They also mentioned that both the temple authorities and the archaeological department have the duty of looking after the management of the temple and the other resources, but neither of them has taken any proper steps towards a solution of the matter at hand.

“The archaeological department only works within 30-40 meters of the temple area. If someone from the outside wants to clean the pond, they don’t allow it,” mentioned a local person while talking about the incident.

Officials with the archaeology department however mentioned that they visited the location as soon as they received news about the sudden death of the fish. They also mentioned that the fisheries department has been called to find the exact reason for the death and determine if it is pollution, lack of oxygen or some other problem.
