Assam Congress Demands Immediate Transfer of DC and SP Of Darrang After 2 Protesters Die In Sipajhar Clash

Guwahati: The BJP-led Assam government has been facing severe backlash from the Assam Congress after the eviction drive in Sipajhar escalated to a massive clash between the protestors and the police.

The Sipajhar clash had taken place on September 23 when at least 2 protestors had died due to police firing. In addition, 9 police personnel have been injured after they were attacked by the protestors with sticks and other weapons.

To facilitate a 'transparent inquiry' the Assam Congress MP Ripun Bora has demanded the immediate transfer of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district.

Congress MP Ripun Bora also highlighted the fact that the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district is none other than the brother of the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Bora suggested that the relationship between the brothers may come in the way of a 'transparent' inquiry process.

It is to be mentioned that the SP of Darrang district, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, is the brother of the Assam Chief Minister.

Taking this matter to social media, Congress MP wrote on Twitter, "Due to public outcry @mygovassam ordered Judicial enquiry under a rtd. Judge of GHC to enquire into #PoliceBrutality of Dholpur. We demand the IMMEDIATE TRANSFER of the DC & SP(being CM's own brother) of Darrang Dist. for transparency in the enquiry."

The deputy leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi also tweeted about this issue and said, "The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's own brother is the Superintendent Police of the Darrang district where the barbaric violence took place. It is clear that this CM-SP duo did not want a peaceful resolution to the eviction drive. The CM continues to bring shame to Assam."
