DHUBRI: The Congress emerged as the leading party in the Dhubri district Zilla Parishad councillor seats in the recent panchayat polls, winning 10 out of 20 seats. The BJP-AGP alliance secured 5 seats, while the AIUDF was pushed to the third position with 3 seats.

According to official sources, Congress won 10 seats, BJP secured 5, AIUDF managed 3, Raijor Dal opened its account with 1 seat, and 1 seat went to an independent candidate.

At the Anchalik Panchayat level, Congress bagged 62 seats, BJP won 20, AIUDF was reduced to 19 seats, AGP managed to win 6 seats, Raijor Dal grabbed 2 seats in its first panchayat poll, and independent candidates won 19 seats. The Congress party’s performance in Dhubri has been impressive, and with the support of Raijor Dal or independent candidates, it may be able to form the district council body. A Congress leader said that after 2006, the party had lost its ground in Dhubri district due to the entry of AIUDF in the political arena. However, after defeating Badruddin Ajmal in the 2024 parliamentary election by Rakibul Hussain, the party has been slowly but steadily regaining its lost ground.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Dhubri District BJP president Ranjit Ray appeared upbeat as BJP won five Zilla Parishad seats, which is being viewed as a significant achievement in this religious minority-dominated district. “We have performed better in this panchayat poll and made considerable inroads into minority-dominated areas compared to the last panchayat election. We are committed to achieving even better results in the years to come,” Ray added with a beaming face.
