Guwahati: In regards to the recent tragedy that took place due to illegal rat-hole mining in Assam's Dima Hasao district, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi revealed to the public that a letter to PM Modi has been written by him requesting for a SIT probe into the matter.
It is to be noted that until now, four bodies have been recovered so far while five others are still trapped in the coal quarry.
He alleged that it was due to the weak enforcement of law in the state and local complicity that had resulted in such illegal mining to remain unchecked, resulting in such a tragic incident.
On January 6, the quarry was suddenly flooded with water from an unknown source leaving 9 workers trapped while others managed to escape. This incident took place in Umrangso which is located in the Dima Hasao district of Assam.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, the Congress MP highlighted that the fate of the trapped coal miners remain uncertain even after six days of rescue efforts have taken place.
Mentioning the letter he has written to PM Modi, the Congress MP emphasized how "broader issues of safety, corruption and environmental harm need to be addressed."
He further added that such kind of tragedy must be prevented from occurring in future. He also demanded justice on behalf of the families of the victim.
