JORHAT: The Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate of Titabor has turned down the closure report in the death case of Dipankar Gogoi, who allegedly died by suicide in December last year in Assam’s Jorhat district.
A day after police questioned 24-year-old Gogoi in relation to the grenade blast outside an Army base in the district, he committed suicide. His sister, Rimlee Saikia, filed the case against former Jorhat SP Mohanlal Meena and other police officials.
Saikia had alleged that Meena and his team had physically and mentally tortured Gogoi, leading to his tragic demise. As per reports, the police picked up Gogoi on December 22, 2023, and released him after four days of alleged torture.
The post-mortem report indicated signs of physical assault on Gogoi’s body. However, the investigating officer failed to consider these findings and other evidence, resulting in the untimely closure of the case.
The magistrate, understanding the severity of the allegations and the potential risk of injustice, has advised the police to reinvestigate the case under the supervision of a senior officer.
Following the widespread outrage over Gogoi's death, Assam DGP GP Singh ordered an IGP-level probe into Dipankar's death. The IGP Eastern Range conducted the investigation into the incident, which included the procedural part, analyzed the CCTV footage from the police station, and reviewed the contents of the medical examination report after questioning.
