GUWAHATI: Assam COVID-19 pandemic has been deteriorating again since the beginning of the new year.

Addressing a press meet on January 5 State Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta expressed worry over the current situation and said that the COVID cases have started increasing again since January 1 this year.

Commenting that the situation is alarming the Health Minister added that the state government would take a final call over the pandemic today. " We will take a final call to tackle the situation after discussing the matter with the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister will reach Guwahati tomorrow and will hold an emergency discussion with him. Since January 1, we have seen a spike in the COVID cases," he said.

Elaborating the details on how the pandemic situation has worsened the Minister added that on January 1, the state reported 150 COVID cases.

On the following that the cases rose to 153 and on January 3, 351 persons from to and fro of the state tested positive for the new coronavirus. On January 4, over 300 COVID positive cases were detected in the state. According to the health minister, the positivity rate continues to soar and today it has crossed 500 marks.

Minister Mahanta informed that the State Health Department is fully prepared to face and tackle the situation. He said that 4,991 isolation beds across the state have been readied for COVID patients.

Besides, Oxygen supported hospital beds have been kept for a similar purpose. He also said that 1000 hospital beds under the Guwahati Medical College & Hospital are kept ready for COVID patients.
