MANGALDAI: In a horrific road accident that occurred at 5:55 AM near Khetri in Sonapur, Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma (65 years), retired Vice-Principal of Raha College, and his wife Archana Devi lost their lives on the spot. Meanwhile, their 8-year-old only daughter, Kripalini Garg, is critically injured and fighting for her life at GNRC Hospital in Guwahati.
According to details, Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma, the second son of the Late Jatindra Mohan Dev Sharma and the Late Nirmaya Devi of Menapara near here, had joined Raha College as a professor in the Geography department and later retired as Vice-Principal five years ago. During his service, he became deeply integrated into the social fabric of Raha and settled permanently in Raha Raja Gaon. His only daughter, Kripalini Garg, is a third-grade student at Raha Shankardev Shishu Niketan.
Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma, along with his wife and daughter, had come to his in-law’s home on August 9 to attend a religious function. On August 10, as per their planned schedule, they performed rituals at the Ardhnarishwar temple in Deomornoi. After spending two days, on Tuesday evening, he visited his elder brother Dwijendra Mohan Dev Sharma’s home in Lengeripara, Mangaldai, to pay respects to his brother and sister-in-law before bidding farewell. That night, he stayed with his family at his father-in-law’s house in Pati Darrang, Deomornoi. Early on Wednesday morning, Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma, accompanied by his wife Archana Devi and daughter Kripalini Garg, set out for Raha in their four-wheeler, driven by Dr Sharma himself. Despite relatives advising against travelling early in the morning, they proceeded to ensure Kripalini could reach her school in Raha on time.
Tragically, before reaching their destination, a devastating accident occurred near Khetri in Sonapur. The vehicle, bearing registration number AS01ET2351 and driven by Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma, lost control and crashed violently into a tree on the road divider. Both Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma and his wife Archana Devi were killed instantly while their daughter, Kripalini Garg, was severely injured.
The sudden demise of Dr Gajendra Mohan Dev Sharma and his wife Archana Devi, who were actively involved in various organizations in Raha, cast a pall of grief over Raha and Mangaldai.
Late Dr Sharma has left behind his critically injured daughter, three brothers—singer Dwijendra Mohan Dev Sharma, Nazira College Librarian Dr Rajendra Mohan Dev Sharma, and singer Jivendra Mohan Dev Sharma—as well as his retired Librarian sister Dr Hemlata Devi, and other relatives. Their last rites were performed on Wednesday evening at the Tengabari cremation ground in Mangaldai.
