MANGALDAI: Darrang police, in a significant achievement, arrested notorious interstate car thief Anil Chauhan who was involved in more than 5000 car theft cases across the country. The arrest was made on the evening of June 23 at about 5 PM at the Rangiya railway station while he was ready to leave Assam along with his wife. The police also arrested his third wife Geeta Singh Chouhan following the recovery of some stolen articles from her bag.

Acting on a tip off and under supervision of Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rosy Talukdar laid a trap at Rangiya railway station with the cooperation of the Government Railway Police staff, and successfully arrested Anil Chouhan and his wife. Significantly in the Aadhaar card recovered from his possession, his name has been mentioned as Anil Singh, son of Deshraj Singh of Deshraj Colony of Ghaziabad. Interestingly a Bhagawat Geeta was also recovered from him.

Anil Chauhan has been linked to many criminal cases, including auto theft, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, rhino poaching, and violations of the Arms Act. He was declared a proclaimed offender in several cases.

The Enforcement Directorate earlier raided his properties, seizing assets like his villa and luxury cars, which were later auctioned. He was also convicted and served five years in prison and later released in 2020. The police investigation is ongoing and an operation underway to nab his absconding accomplices.

Few days back, Darrang police with the active cooperation of Nagaland police recovered a dumper bearing registration number AS13AC5128 from Kohima which was stolen from Burigaon under Dalgaon police station on the wee hours of June 14, and arrested one Suraj Sing of Balipara area in Sonitpur district, who is the brother-in-law of Anil Chouhan.

In another achievement, Kamrup police on June 25 arrested absconding notorious criminal Rafiqul Islam, an accomplice of Anil Chouhan at the Palasbari area. Rafiqul, at the time of the arrest of Anil Chouhan, had managed to flee away from Rangiya railway station.
