DHUBRI: Locals in Dhubri were alarmed when a severely decomposed and mummified body was found in a char area close to Chala Kura. The Brahmaputra River's abnormally low water levels caused the body to surface, exposing portions of the riverbed that are normally submerged during the monsoon season.
The body, believed to have been exposed to the elements for weeks or even months, was in an advanced state of decomposition, making identification extremely difficult. Locals stumbled upon the remains during their routine activities in the area.
The retreating water has made the char region, a river island that is typically challenging to reach, visible. The circumstances surrounding the death have not yet been established by local authorities, and requests for information to help identify the deceased have been made.
As declining water levels increasingly uncover hidden hazards and unresolved problems in the river's depths, the discovery has sparked worries about the environmental changes impacting the Brahmaputra.
Last month, 14-year-old Amit Chauhan drowned in the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati. He reportedly had his school bag and other belongings with him when the powerful river currents abruptly carried him away. A search was immediately initiated once the alarm was raised.
To save the child, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were sent in. Later that day, Amit's body was found in Guwahati, close to Sukreswar Ghat.
