Assam: Demow MLA Sushanta Borgohain casts vote in Panchayat Polls

Panchayat polls in Demow saw 702 candidates contesting across 291 booths, with 58.53% turnout by 3 PM, amid reports of voting issues and isolated chaos.

DEMOW: The first phase of the Panchayat polls was held in 95 No. Demow constituency on Friday. According to information received, there are 171648 Voters in 95 No. Demow constituency in the Panchayat Poll and 291 polling stations and 28 Gaon Panchayats and 2 Anchalik Panchayats. A total of 702 candidates representing various political parties contested in the Panchayat polls in Demow, with a total of 45 polling stations reserved for women.

Sushanta Borgohain, MLA of 95 No. Demow Constituency, and his wife cast their votes in 80 (Kha) Adarsha Vidyalaya Demow, Raichai on Friday. The polling started at 7:30 AM and the people were seen queuing up to cast their votes since early morning here. According to information received, in 6 No. Maharani Panchayat, in a voting centre in Rupahibam Middle Asomiya School, a girl named Rupa Gogoi was in the queue to cast her vote when she was informed that someone had cast a vote in her name. The details will be known only after a proper enquiry. According to Sources, in Athabari Gaon Panchayat, in Rajmai Bagan Primary School voting centre, many voters were not able to cast their vote. As there were only 4 voting centres in the school and a large number of voters queued up, many voters were yet to vote when it was 4:30 PM. When the main gate of the Rajmai Bagan Primary School was closed as per election rules, a chaotic situation prevailed. Later, the administration official and higher police officials reached the site and handled the situation. Till 3 PM, the poll percentage in Demow AP and Sivasagar AP under Demow CDC was 58.53 percent.
