Assam: Deplorable Road Conditions Force Locals to Repair it by Themselves

KHERONI: The deplorable road conditions in some parts of the state have been a major area of concern for the local people of these locations. So much so that the local people have been forced to put in their own savings to repair these roads. The local people were forced to do the same in the West Karbi Anglong District of the state.

The incident took place in the Matikhula locality of the Kheroni region of the West Karbi Anglong district of the state wherein the local rural people were forced to use their own savings to repair the road. The road comes under the Lok Nirman department, but the authorities have not taken the necessary action to undertake the necessary repairs on the project. Not only is it difficult for people to walk on this road but also unusable by any vehicles including emergency vehicles like ambulances.

This important road connects the Chota Matikhola Village to the Kheroni- Jirikiding PWD road which passes through the Makwe Hidi and Nihang villages of the region. The road was in a very devastated state, making it very hard for the locals to travel. Following this, the locals used their own savings to commission an earthmover to fill the potholes and make the road usable by people.

Similar incidents took place in other parts of the district as well in the past when people took up massive protests. The developmental works in terms of road infrastructure development have been proved to be a failure, especially in the Rangkhelang- Rongpangbong region. After facing problems related to transportation, the local people decided to repair a 20 km long stretch of road all by themselves through community work. The local people have raised questions against the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for their failure to create and maintain proper roads in the region and demanded that they implement immediate and concrete steps towards that direction They also pointed out that at a large number of points, people have to cross using risky methods in the lack of proper bridges in the localities. It is noteworthy that this place is located on the border between Assam and Meghalaya.
